Sometimes when I listen to Native flute music I am transported to another time and place.  A place where you can hear the wind singing across the open prairie, a time where things were simpler.....not necessarily easier, just simpler.  We forget sometimes to take a moment to just listen to the wind, feel the sun on our face or the grass beneath our feet.  It's nice to just know of something that invokes these feelings.   

If you are traveling in the southwest, get a massage, or attend an indigenous festival then you have probably heard Native flute music somewhere along the way.  Did you know that you could not only listen to it but that you could also play it yourself?  In addition to my flute products I am now offering a beginners flute.  These are small back pack flutes that are easy to play for beginners, small and transportable as well.  Little Fast Elk is the maker of these little gems and when I tried his flutes I knew that I wanted to offer them to my clients.  Though Little Fast Elk makes many different sizes of flutes this one is the one that everyone MUST have.  I am pairing these with matching leather bags so the you are ready to go with this little package.  Another thing that was important was finding a price bracket that was affordable.  Nice flutes can be costly but this little back pack version with a flute bag is coming in at $175.00 and that is a pretty good price for the combination.  

  
  
 Many people play flutes for therapeutic reasons as well.  Because of their ability to relax you many are playing them for therapeutic reasons.  They seem just transport you and demand your undivided attention so you can "get away" for a bit.  There are also medicinal reasons to play.  Playing the flute can increase lung capacity and help with breathing difficulties.  There is a friend of mine who plays to help her with some facial paralysis she has from and accident......so as you can see there are many reasons to play.  This is a great way to start. 

The thing with flutes.....well, once you get one you just want another.  A different key, a different kind.....one in every key.  Everyone that I have met that plays a flute has more than one.  It's just a flute thing I guess. Once you have one then you need to find a flute circle near you.   I think I have touched on this before but there are flute circles in most larger cities.  Each one is different and 95% are free to the public and you don't have to even play a flute to go, you can just go and listen and enjoy.  Most flute circles are made up of local flute enthusiasts. They usually take turns playing and even give free lessons to beginners.  Everyone is very welcoming and helpful and wants to include you ....and encourage you to join this awesome group of people.   Some flute circles have flutes that you can play....and many flute people also sell flutes and flute accessories. 

Speaking of flute accessories - I offer those too.  Flute bags, so you can carry your flute to the flute circle; of course! They offer protection and an easy way to transport your flute.  Flute bags can be customized and done in many colors and sizes.  There are flute ties, or flute wraps as well.  These are pieces of fringed leather that can be added to a flute to change it from a 6 hole flute to a 5 hole flute. And flute wraps add that bit of softness to the wood.....and fringe of course because we LOVE fringe.  There are also flute stands.  I am just starting to carry these.  Again, I have found a local man who does the most awesome wood work and he is now making these really cool organic flute stands for me.  Beautiful wood grains, spalted wood, and some with bark still attached paired with beaver chewed spindles......they are beautiful and made for 2 or 3 flutes.  There are no custom orders for these at this time so get them while you can. 

And lastly - a brand new item this week.  Flute Feathers.  This is one tie with two feathers on it....in case you don't like fringe. Flute feathers can actually cover a hole but mostly they are just for decoration.
