This is a sacred bag for sure. The pictures that you see are different memorial bags that were custom orders. The elements to these bags will give you some ideas of how you could customize your own memorial bag. I call them signature memorial bags because I have never seen a customized/personalized bag with the focus on a memorial. This goes right along with all of my signature bags.....I call them story bags.
The bags that you see are made of white deerskin on the back and smoked deerskin on the front. Memorial Bags are full of symbolism. The white deerskin is used, white being the "in Memory" color. I will usually try to include a scar in the leather to somewhere, this symbolizes the scar of losing someone. Scars heal but they are always there to remind us of the pain and the loss. I also oftentimes include a hole somewhere and I try to leave that in tact, even if it is in the fringe. This represents the hole that is left in your heart when you loose someone. Even though what you is mostly white and natural I do do bags in other colors too.
Under the flap there is a great place to put personal brandings such as initials or a medicinal vine. There are brands that represent the loss of parents and other symbols for certain types of healing. There are usually stones that are sewn into the bag are amethyst - representing mind quieting, inner peace, healing and positive transitions. Citrine - energizing. Quartz - calming, etc
Sizes and Prices
The bags in these pictures range from 8" X 8" and larger. The price range for this larger size starts at $125.00 and goes up from there. I make smaller bags too....like keepsake bags and prices will start at $65.00 for smaller bags. For larger size bags I usually recommend a strong strap. The strap can be crossover style or just over the shoulder.
Why
I began designing these bags for someone who had lost both parents. Having lost mine I knew that there was a need to keep a few mementos close to your heart. This is perfect for small notes, rings, locks of hair, any small treasure that is dear to your heart. I personally think that a bag like this is nice for young people. Death is so final in this life and when you are young it is hard to understand the word final. As we age we understand it better. This offers a younger person something that they can actually hold in their hands when they begin the journey of learning what final means.
As you can see in the other pictures, some of the bags have tears and scars or just tears. All of the bags have brandings that tell the stories. Much can be said on a bag. Some brands on the outside that are visible to everyone and some on the inside and under the flap where it is personal to the owner.
Timeframe
In most cases memorial bags can be made within 24 hours and expedited shipping is available at an additional cost when necessary. If someone is needing this for a funeral or wake please covo me and we will make it happen. Otherwise custom bags take normally 1 - 2 weeks if I have all of the materials in stock.
